He was overlooked for the main draw’s final discretionary wildcard: MATT EBDEN's (2001-2004) qualification for the Australian Open came after a stunning series of successful outings over the past few months in which he beat many a tough opponent.

The matches played in the lead up to his selection helped equip Matt with the confidence to 'go for' the win. Which is just as well! The Open draw served up some tough opposition for Australian players generally, and for Matt Ebden in particular. His first opponent was Gael Monfils, seeded No. 12 in the world.
Matt's comment: "It's just another match. You step on the court and it's 50-50, win or lose."
As it turned out, Matt had to battle the weather as well as his opponent. His match began on the night of Day 1 and was called off after a few games due to rain. It continued the next day, but it was the Frenchman who came away with the win (this time!) in straight sets, 6-4 6-4 6-4.
Matt was certainly not disgraced and regards the loss as a learning experience.
“Obviously he’s a great player," says Matt. "Maybe I showed I could at least match it with him. I guess it ended up being just one break each set. I’ll take the experience and the confidence that I can match it with guys who are right up there - and hopefully next time, work on a few things, improve a few things and maybe knock them off next time.”
We’re quite sure you will, Matt and look forward to watching your progress. Best of Luck!
