Sixty-two years after Memorial Hall was officially opened, the redeveloped Hall and new Cygnet Theatre precinct were formally unveiled on 30 May. Over 300 guests joined staff and students at the ceremony, featuring speeches on the Hall's origins, significance, and future at Hale School.

It was also acknowledged that the Hall was entered onto the State Heritage Register on 30 April, in recognition of its significance as the first Brutalist-style building in the nation.

Hale Headmaster, Dean Dell’Oro highlighted the Hall’s historical significance, stating, “Memorial Hall is significant to the families who lost sons in war; to the families who gave whatever they could to build it; to the students who perform or are recognised on stage; to those sitting their final exams, and to the entire Hale community who come together for time-honoured rituals and ceremonies.” He emphasised the need for the Hall in the school community and the importance of honouring its past while preparing it for the future.

Churchlands MLA Christine Tonkin represented the Minister for Education and was thanked by Junior School Captains, Blake Beecham and Banjo Laurie. They noted the Hall’s foyer, which honours Hale’s fallen soldiers through archival displays.

Chair of the Hale School Board of Governors, Tim Urquhart (1974-78), discussed the Board’s decision to approve the redevelopment and the naming of Stow Green in honour of Quinton Stow (1911-19), a past Chair of the Board from 1958 to 1978. The old Stow Theatre, now replaced by this redevelopment, was named after him.

John Garland (1972-76), a member of the Board of Governors, reflected on the Hall's importance, saying, “Memorial Hall stands apart. It is the heart and soul of the School, here for the whole community – students, teachers, staff, parents, and Old Boys alike. This is a Hall where generations come together both during our time here and long after. It is where enduring memories are created, as it will be for the boys seated here today.”

President of the Old Haleians’ Association, Lee Panotidis (1989-94), unveiled the plaque before The Right Reverend Kate Wilmot dedicated and blessed the building.

The Memorial Hall and adjoining performing arts precinct are now open for business!

The official opening event was recorded for the Hale School Archives, view the assembly in full HERE.
