WONDER IN
WEARABLE
ART
The Wearable Art Mandurah Showcase is one of Australia’s
premier arts events, which annually invites artists of all ages from
around the world to exhibit their exquisite and creative garments.
This year, two Year 6 students – William Dunwoodie and Aryan
Narula – entered their own pieces in the Youth 12 years and under
category. Both students used time in their Visual Arts classes and
their HaSS unit to create a garment that communicated a personal
statement about their understanding of Sustainable Development
Goal number 14: Life Below Water, and number 15: Life on Land.
Each student needed to engage in their own personal inquiry where
they researched, designed, experimented and created a garment
over many hours spent in the Art room during lunchtimes and after
school.
Entering the competition required the boys to write an artist
statement and submit photos of their outfit where they were the
model. After successfully passing the online judging, the outfits
were in the next heat where professional models
wore their pieces for a runway performance
and showcased their work to a panel
of judges. The boys were able to
view and work with professional
photographers, make-up
artists and hair stylists to “When I saw that beautiful model
