Cy Carboni (1975-82) and
David Roberts (1971-79)
Although they hadn’t seen each other for over 40 years,
a common interest in marathon running saw Cy and
David rekindle their friendship in September. After
arriving in Berlin to participate in the Berlin Marathon,
they caught up over a traditional ‘carb’ meal the evening
prior to the race, not expecting to see each other on
race day as David was starting in a different race corral
to Cy. David Roberts (L) and Cy Carboni (R)
Just as the competitors ran through the Brandenburg
Gate, with less than a mile to the finish, David saw Cy’s initial goal was to complete three marathons in Berlin, London and
Cy running just ahead of him, recognising him by the Chicago over a period of three years. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic,
distinctly Western Australian shirt he was wearing. however, his timeline of three years was condensed into three weeks!
Although David has lived in New York for 27 years, A week after completing Berlin, Cy competed in the London Marathon
he remains an Aussie at heart and always wears his and then the following week in a very chilly 5 degrees, he finished
green and gold Australia shirt for major races, so in true the Chicago Marathon in his fastest pace of all three events. In
Aussie style, the two crossed the finish line together. direct contrast, experiencing very warm and humid conditions, David
completed the New York Marathon in the first week of November.
Confident that the next time they see each other won’t take another 40
years, Cy and David will continue to support each other towards their
future running endeavours. In 2023, David has his sights on the Boston
and Chicago Marathons while Cy will take on the Tokyo Marathon.
Anton Hamp (2005-09)
Vice-Captain of the Hale School Alcock Cup-winning team of 2009,
Anton was subsequently listed for two years with the West Coast
Eagles. Over the next decade he played over 160 games of WAFL
football with Claremont before transferring to West Perth at the end
of 2021 – a shock decision, however, one that paid dividends. Playing
mostly at centre-half-forward for West Perth, Anton’s football swan
song was winning the 2022 WAFL premiership in an epic final game
against Claremont at Leederville Oval.
After hanging up the footy boots, Anton looks forward to balancing
family time with his work commitments as a geotechnical engineer
working on the Perth rail expansion project, Metronet.
